Health General Health issues in the Bull Terrier (Miniature) are the same as the Bull Terrier with the exception of Primary Lense Luxation (PLL). Please bear in mind that all breeds of dogs do have heriditary problems, even cross breds !! The Majority of problems affecting this breed are recessive, therefor can skip many generations and can go unnoticed to the breeder. We are not god , but the vast majority of us try and breed the healthiest puppies possible with the knowledge we have. Primary Lens Luxation NEWS FLASH After a long wait the mutated copy of the gene has been found . We as breeders can now test our breeding animals and worried pet owners can also do this test to find out the status of their dogs. Information and testing procedures are to be found at these two sites Animal Health Trust UK http://www.aht.org.uk/genetics_pll.html Orthopedic foundation for animals USA http://www.caninegeneticdiseases.net/GLX/mainGLX.htm
Primary Lense Luxation (PLL) is a genetic disorder affecting the eye sight of the Bull Terrier (Miniature). It can lead to blindness and at this present time there is no known cure. Affected dogs can be treated with drops (Xalatan), operated on, or complete removal of the eye. Sadly many dogs are put to sleep as not all treatments are successful (or expensive) and it usually will affect the other eye shortly after the first. Those affected dogs are normally not diagnosed until 3-10 years of age , although younger dogs have luxated and so have older dogs.
