Buyer Beware

Most people have a back yard and a lot of people have dogs but what we term as a Back yard breeder or BYB are the following, this is intended for the Australians although most of it applies world wide although the changes will be in registrations and governing bodies of purebred dogs.

Back yard breeders are people who breed dogs with out any regard to the breed. They are not registered with any canine council and can not produce pedigrees for the puppies.  The motivation to have litters is  thinking they can make a quick buck. They may only have the one litter ever or many litters. They have no code of ethics (rules) to abide by.

Difference is

  • They can breed their dogs as often as they want (which can be every 5-6 months) not giving the bitches time to recover.
  • Usually they are sold with no vaccinations, worming, or any sort of veterinary care (why would you take a litter of puppies to get a vet check and pay all that money for a check? Ask yourself)
  • They can be sold at ANY age usually 5-6 weeks old, the quicker they sell them the less time they have to feed them (therefore saving money) This gives no time what so ever for the puppies to learn social interaction, and other skills.
They feed the cheapest if diets, leading to a poor start in life and associated health problems due to incorrect nutrition
  • The lie to you to get the sale, they can tell you anything they want, and are not held accountable
  • They may say it is a Bull Terrier or Miniature but is it? Usually the parents have no papers to prove the parents even are purebred. Sometimes even these people were conned.
  • They ask ridiculas prices for a pup, which a lot of times is not what it is even supposed to be (a lot turn out to be crossed)
  • They have no history of the parents either medical or temperament.
  • The have no idea of hereditary diseases and don’t care.
  • Once you pay for your puppy that’s it. No more association with that person exists
  • Don’t care who they sell too as long as the person has the money

A Registered Breeder has rules that ensures certain things MUST be abided by, some of these things are the following also you can visit the Australian National kennel Control to get the rest. Also each states Canine control has different methods, they too can be checked by the same web site, just follow the links on my links page.

  •  We have certain rules regarding time frames of bitches being bred from. So they are not over bred and are in the best health.
  • We can not sell under 8 weeks of age minimum, giving time for proper socialisation skills and maturity.
  • All puppies MUST be Vaccinated and wormed and in some states Microchipped (others also choose to microchip although not compulsory) a form of permanant identification and ownership to you the owner
  • Puppies are registered with their state council and issued a pedigree. (this pedigree is not a huge cost to us don’t be fooled into BYB charging an extra amount for these papers (the papers just  don’t exist)
  • The pedigree paper is like a family tree of 3 generations of that puppy. Which can be looked at and traced back.
  • We have extensive knowledge of the breed and are here to help what ever the question
  • Puppies all come with a diet sheet on feeding and most breeders have a very extensive folder with tons of information.
  • We do not sell from the back of a car at a service station or park you are welcome to our home.
  • Guaranteed you are getting the real thing, not a crossbred.

Tips on purchasing a puppy

Contact the state Canine Council in your state for a list of Registered breeders with the breed you want also a contact number for the breed club if they have one. Some breed clubs do have a puppy officer who can put you on to breeders with puppies available.

Do a bit of research on the breed you want to make sure it is the one for you, your family, and lifestyle

Don’t be limited to calling/contacting one breeder, call many.

Ask any questions you may have, never feel embarrassed .

Remember buying a Registered Purebred dog you may have to wait as they are not always easy to come buy and most breeders will probably have a waiting list, so you may have to wait.

Most breeders are fussy to whom their puppies are sold to don’t be surprised if you are asked a barrage of questions , please just answer them truthfully.

Don’t expect to be able to come to their house just because you feel like a day out. Most Breeders do not have an open house for all too see (for a lot of reason regarding safety and transmission of diseases etc  I am sure you could understand.)

When a puppy becomes available and you are invited to come and have a look some tips on what to look for are.

Surroundings- are they clean?   (this doesn’t mean immaculate either as a lot of breeders dedicate their lives to dogs the yard maybe a bit untidy BUT should never be unhygienic)

Dog/ Bitches on show – Do they look healthy and happy?

Puppies – Do they look healthy and happy? Eyes bright and clear, well fed but not fat, coats, and eyes etc in good condition?

Mum – Does she look healthy and happy? Remember though she has just had  a litter 8 weeks ago and may look a bit droopy and thin.

Father – Most likely wont be there, a lot of litters are from dogs all over the country and the world, but if he is ask to see him.

Again ask any question that comes to mind- remember this puppy if you purchase will be with you hopefully for a very long time as part of a family.

PUREBRED means that the puppy is from Parents & Grand Parents etc who are the ONE Breed.

PEDIGREE means a registered puppy from registered parents through a RECOGNISED body (here in Australia it is the ANKC) produced by a registered breeder.

If the seller is not a registered breeder then honestly there is no way of telling. I have seen puppies from a purebred litter out of the paper and the people even showed me pedigrees of the parents BUT it would of made the mother 14years old !!!!!!!

Registered purebred means both parents are pedigree and the owner is a member of the state controlling body and the puppies are registered (contact your local association as all states differ in the way of processing pedigrees) . To check if the sellers are registered contact your state body with the owners kennel prefix and name.

I have been compelled to write this and put it on my site as I see too many heartbreaking stories of people buying from a BYB and the sweet little puppy they bought is not a purebred ( and they have been disappointed as they only wanted a Bull terrier or Miniature ) or has problems with their health that is preventable (like parvo, distemper, etc) they have ended up spending 1000s of dollars in vet bills in the first few months of its life, just to save a few bucks. Sometimes those poor puppies don’t survive or a very diabilitated for the rest of its life. Or very important , to which i see so much of , poor social /behaviour and training problems. It is so upsetting to see and leaves these poor owners devastated and hugely out of pocket .
