Buyer Beware
Most people have a back yard and a lot of people have dogs but what we term as a Back yard breeder or BYB are the following, this is intended for the Australians although most of it applies world wide although the changes will be in registrations and governing bodies of purebred dogs. Back yard breeders are people who breed dogs with out any regard to the breed. They are not registered with any canine council and can not produce pedigrees for the puppies. The motivation to have litters is thinking they can make a quick buck. They may only have the one litter ever or many litters. They have no code of ethics (rules) to abide by. Difference is A Registered Breeder has rules that ensures certain things MUST be abided by, some of these things are the following also you can visit the Australian National kennel Control to get the rest. Also each states Canine control has different methods, they too can be checked by the same web site, just follow the links on my links page. Contact the state Canine Council in your state for a list of Registered breeders with the breed you want also a contact number for the breed club if they have one. Some breed clubs do have a puppy officer who can put you on to breeders with puppies available. Do a bit of research on the breed you want to make sure it is the one for you, your family, and lifestyle Don’t be limited to calling/contacting one breeder, call many. Ask any questions you may have, never feel embarrassed . Remember buying a Registered Purebred dog you may have to wait as they are not always easy to come buy and most breeders will probably have a waiting list, so you may have to wait. Most breeders are fussy to whom their puppies are sold to don’t be surprised if you are asked a barrage of questions , please just answer them truthfully. Don’t expect to be able to come to their house just because you feel like a day out. Most Breeders do not have an open house for all too see (for a lot of reason regarding safety and transmission of diseases etc I am sure you could understand.) When a puppy becomes available and you are invited to come and have a look some tips on what to look for are. Surroundings- are they clean? (this doesn’t mean immaculate either as a lot of breeders dedicate their lives to dogs the yard maybe a bit untidy BUT should never be unhygienic) Dog/ Bitches on show – Do they look healthy and happy? Puppies – Do they look healthy and happy? Eyes bright and clear, well fed but not fat, coats, and eyes etc in good condition? Mum – Does she look healthy and happy? Remember though she has just had a litter 8 weeks ago and may look a bit droopy and thin. Father – Most likely wont be there, a lot of litters are from dogs all over the country and the world, but if he is ask to see him. Again ask any question that comes to mind- remember this puppy if you purchase will be with you hopefully for a very long time as part of a family. PUREBRED means that the puppy is from Parents & Grand Parents etc who are the ONE Breed. PEDIGREE means a registered puppy from registered parents through a RECOGNISED body (here in Australia it is the ANKC) produced by a registered breeder. If the seller is not a registered breeder then honestly there is no way of telling. I have seen puppies from a purebred litter out of the paper and the people even showed me pedigrees of the parents BUT it would of made the mother 14years old !!!!!!! Registered purebred means both parents are pedigree and the owner is a member of the state controlling body and the puppies are registered (contact your local association as all states differ in the way of processing pedigrees) . To check if the sellers are registered contact your state body with the owners kennel prefix and name.
